Why the AHCA defeat is only the begining

The AHCA fell into major defeat. This is great news for Progressives that want to see an end to tyranny and for poor, elderly and middle class people who weren’t ready for their benefits to get cut. The fact that Republicans voted over 60 times to repeal the ACA when they didn’t have the majority to win and couldn’t muster enough votes With the majority they now hold is outrageous to hardline GOPers. However, it should be more outrageous to Progressives. Why? Because of the reason it failed.

The majority of Reps who pledged to vote no were from the House Freedom Caucus. First a little history. The HFC started mid-January of 2015. Their purpose was to basically go against then speaker John Boehner. They put so much pressure on him, that he later resigned in September of that same year. These guys are hard line Republicans. Their problem with the AHCA wasn’t that it would kick their poor and weak constituents off healthcare, it was that the bill gave Government “too much control” over the healthcare situation.

Let’s think about that for a moment. Government lawmakers voting against their own law because it puts Government in too big a role of taking care of the people.

This is the real outrage!!

These lawmakers already get a Federally sponsored, full family, single payer healthcare plan and lifetime pension. All this talk about “choices” and “freedom” and market competition is garbage. The real reason is that the lawmakers that hold the power right now are bought and paid for by the American Insurance lobbies!

What can we do?

There is a lot of action we can and should take right now to fight this. First, we need to thank the few lawmakers who actually did listen to their constituents and voted against the bill because it was too unkind. They are the moderate wing of the party. It’s an easy list because it’s only 10. Any GOP reps not on that list pledged a yes vote or a no vote for a variety of other reasons. You can find the full list here:

  • Barbara Comstock
    VA-10
  • Charlie Dent
    PA-15
  • Dan Donovan
    NY-11
  • David Joyce
    OH-14
  • Frank A. LoBiondo
    NJ-2
  • Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
    FL-27
  • Jaime Herrera Beutler
    WA-3
  • John Katko
    NY-24
  • Leonard Lance
    NJ-7
  • Rodney Frelinghuysen
    NJ-11

If you live in one of these districts, call, email, fax or visit their office, thank them for listening to you and nicely suggest that they move on to the single payer system we’ve been after all along. We’ve all been beating up our Reps for not listening. It’s time we thank the ones who got that message.

If you live in a blue district, thank your members for pledging no all the same.

For those of you who live in districts represented by the hardliners and the reps who pledged a yes vote, my sympathies. You have the hardest work to do. You need to be in their face. Visit their offices, fax them, email, write and tell them how disgusted you are with their performance. We must let them know this will not stand!

If you don’t have the time to do any of these things, consider signing up for Resistbot. This is a very simple free service that lets you compose a Text message from you phone that gets formatted into an official fax which gets sent to your reps fax machines. It only takes a few minutes and they keep you reminded. Very simple for you, inconvenient for the Reps whose staff then needs to route the fax to your Rep.
